Christmas 2014

Aaron and I both had to work in the hospital the week of Christmas, including Christmas day. I was pretty bummed I was assigned to work that week since Christmas is probably my favorite holiday, but the week didn't end up being too bad. Our census in the children's hospital was relatively low and things were quieter than usual. We got off work in time on Christmas Eve to make it to mass, so we got the celebration started in the best way possible. I had let one or both of my interns off early every day that week, and they repaid the favor by letting me go early on Christmas day, which was awesome. Aaron was let off really early, too. We got to open presents with family and enjoy a big Christmas feast. My grandparents were in town, so we enjoyed getting to spend some time with them. My grandma had all their family home videos put onto a DVD, so we enjoyed watching videos of my dad and his brothers as kids and my grandparents as young parents. It was such a great day. The fact that I thought I'd be working all day and instead only worked until noon made the celebration all the more meaningful to me.  I really missed being with my family more that week, especially my Julia, but that day was a beautiful bright spot in my month. I had the week following Christmas off, so really enjoyed some quality time with Julia then. I was so grateful to my parents and sisters for making Julia's Christmas vacation magical despite how much Aaron and I had to work. My sisters were home from college and first year of teaching, and, instead of getting to sleep in every day and totally relax, were up playing with Julia. And my parents, despite needing a vacation from all the early mornings and long days taking care of Julia, did it all the way through a holiday week. Seriously, they're all the best <3

Julia dictated this letter to Santa to Elizabeth

A baby and her Baymax.

We added photos to Julia's Disney autograph book!

My grandma expertly avoided any quibbling by buying the girls identical gifts. They loved everything she bought them! And what a hip great grandma, buying Doc McStuffins and Sofia toys, among others!

If that face doesn't capture the excitement of Christmas morning, I'm not sure what does.

Julia asked Santa for a green lantern. Her favorite thing to do was to play in the dark with a small light nearby, like how she loved to play Barbies in the dark with little electric tealights from her mass set.  Santa halfway delivered with this red lantern.  Months later (in May), we had this exchange:
Julia: “Mommy, daddy… Is Santa real?”
Aaron: “Well, St. Nicolas is real.”
Julia: “Is Santa real?”
Kaitlin: “Why are you asking about Santa? Let’s talk about this when it’s closer to Christmas.”
Julia: “Is Santa real? Because I asked for a green lantern for Christmas and I got a red lantern. It just doesn’t make sense.”
Kaitlin: “Do you like your red lantern?”
Julia: “Yes, but it just doesn’t make any sense.”
Kaitlin: “Well, speaking of holidays… what do you want to be next Halloween?”

We gave Julia some princes to go with her birthday princesses.

Julia loved these binoculars from Gee and Papa.

Julia's Fourth Birthday

Julia's fourth birthday was on a Friday, so Aaron and I both had to work, but in the evening, we picked her up and took her out for dinner. Every year, we've let her pick the place, and she's become a bit more sophisticated with each year's choice. When she was two, she wanted McDonald's; when she was three, she wanted Cici's pizza; and this year, she wanted Sushi Train. We enjoyed a nice dinner there. I wish I'd gotten a photo of her wearing her birthday crown from school at Sushi Train because it was pretty darn cute. We told the server that it was Julia's birthday, so at the end of the meal, a group of servers came to sing Happy Birthday to her and brought her dessert sushi - rice crispy treats rolled up in fruit roll-up and sliced into "sushi" with gummy bears on top and a candle in the center. Julia looked embarrassed while they sang happy birthday to her. After the servers scattered, I turned to Julia and said, "Oh, Julia! That was so special, wasn't it?!" Julia said, "Yes... but it was also strange... and awkward." Ha! Four going on fourteen, I tell you!

After we finished dessert we went back to the house to give Julia her birthday gifts. We bought her a miraculous medal to match mine, which Julia was thrilled to receive. She'd lately been noticing mine a lot, holding it and asking me if she could have one too. The other gift we bought was a set of Disney Princess Barbies. Julia was completely enchanted with these. They were actually a great buy - we got them on sale at the Disney Store and they are easily the toys Julia has enjoyed most this year. She plays with them almost every day and has loved them well.

Being goofy!

Julia by the front door... she's grown so much!

The next day, we had a birthday party for Julia at my parents' house. Julia's fourth birthday party was Disney themed. It was the least frills party I've thrown, but we still enjoyed good food and good company and had a wonderful time celebrating our girl. I shared a few photos already, but below enjoy the rest of the photos from that evening.

My parents bought Sofia tableware, a tablecloth, and a balloon, which Julia loved. They also had a rose for her, which she thought was pretty special :-)

The spread - which was super loosely Disney themed... haha! I had everyone guess the which movie each item was from.

Toy Story "Pizza Planet" pizzas... haha!

"Try the gray stuff... it's delicious!" dip with chips. Olaf noses. Soda from Wall-E.

Snow white's apples.

Talk about a Pinterest fail! This cake was supposed to look like the cake that Fauna makes for Aurora's birthday in Sleeping Beauty

Magical, right?

Umm... yeah... about that. Julia thought it looked cool, though, so I guess that's what counts! Plus it tasted really yummy, so that counts too ;-)

Classic Stephen wrapping job... love it!

My grandmom made this quilt for Julia. Amazing, huh? Julia loves it.
