October: 25th Birthday!

I celebrated by 25th birthday on October 13th! A quarter of a century old... craziness!

We celebrated with my family the evening before my birthday, which was fun. On the day of my actual birthday, I decided we'd celebrate by going to a pumpkin patch. We have a halloween pumpkin "patch" (more like a fall fair/bazaar) that sets up near our neighborhood that we frequent a lot in October, but I thought it'd be fun to go to a real pumpkin patch where we could actually pick a pumpkin growing from the earth.

When we got in the car, I pulled up the location on my phone's GPS... and discovered it'd take us 45 minutes to drive there... which would end up being a lot of time in the car for a toddler. We didn't want to drive so far, so we changed plans. I decided we'd go to the anniversary party of an ice cream factory nearby. When we got there, though, there were signs up that the event had been cancelled :-(

By this time, though, Julia was screaming like crazy for pumpkin patch AND ice cream (we'd foolishly kept her informed throughout the morning), so we stopped for lunch at the burger/ice cream place right next to the factory to fulfill at least her latter desire. After lunch, we went to the mall, rode the carousal, got a free balloon ladybug that Julia became obsessed with (i.e. she flipped out when we took it off her wrist for her nap), and wandered into some stores.

Snazzy in orange for Mommy's big day! ;-)

It's hard to smile when your lips are glued to the chocolate shake straw. But, Julia was happy, I assure you.

Hooray for Mustang Sally!

The balloon artist made this really quickly. We were all impressed and Julia was quite smitten with her ladybug.

At the end of October, Aaron surprised me one Sunday afternoon. He'd arranged for one of our good friends to come over and watch Julia, and he took me to the performing arts center to see a live performance of Hamlet. It was very well done and it was so much fun to have a little birthday date, just the two of us. Even if I did fall asleep for a bit during the second act while sitting in the second row. Yeah, I'm still narcoleptic.

So much fun to get out on a date!

Turning 25 made me feel older than some other birthdays have. Twenty-four is mid-twenties, but somehow still felt like early twenties to me, whereas 25 is undeniably mid-twenties. It's crazy how fast my twenties are flying, but it doesn't make me feel anxious, because I don't have any real regrets and wouldn't change a thing about them so far. They've been full of immense joy, big challenges, hard work, lessons in sacrifice, huge blessings, tons of fun, and lots of love. I feel like a lot has been jammed into my twenties so far, and I hope to continue to pack a lot of life into whatever years God blesses me with. Being 24 wasn't as crazy life-altering as 23 was, but it was nice to have a calmer year. Some of the big events of my 25th year of life included:
  • Celebrating my daughter's first birthday and Thanksgiving and second Christmas
  • Watching Julia transition from baby to toddler. Whoa. So many changes!
  • Shifting my parenting from babyhood to toddler-hood, especially in how time and energy is spent. Less time feeding (especially after weaning in January) and changing diapers and holding, and more time running around, playing pretend, answering questions, etc. Though I love the baby stage, it's really been a fun transition.
  • Finishing our core rotations, doing rural months, doing an away rotation and staying with Aaron's family
  • Running my first 5K
  • Becoming a fourth year medical student
  • Preparing for, taking, and passing Step 2 of boards
  • Having some time off and going on vacation
  • Becoming an aunt and awaiting baby G's arrival
I praise and thank God for the gift of life and all His many blessings, especially my faith, my family and friends, our health, our home, education that will allow me to do work I'm passionate about, and His guidance in our life. Being 24 was great, and 25 has been fantastic so far, too!
